Sony Xperia 5 IV could arrive next week, event confirmed for September 1

A new Sony compact phone is expected to arrive early next month

With IFA 2022 just around the corner, we expected to hear something from Sony Mobile as it’s a mainstay of Berlin’s annual tech event. Sony Mobile has confirmed a launch event for September 1, and while it hasn’t revealed the exact Xperia models we’ll be seeing, there’s one big clue that makes us think it’ll be the expected Sony Xperia 5 IV. .

The event is scheduled for September 1 at 3 a.m. ET (i.e. 4 p.m. in Japan and 9 a.m. in Europe), and the event will be streamed live on the company’s YouTube channel. It’s unclear if this event will be held at IFA 2022 in Berlin or if Sony is pulling it away from the show at a similar time.

The event was confirmed on Twitter, and there’s also a teaser video on Sony’s Xperia channel. This video gives us a little hint about which phone to expect. It features musician Cat Burns who used the new Xperia phone to film her latest music video. The video doesn’t explicitly name the Xperia 5 IV, but it does say “Go compact”, suggesting we’ll be looking for a smaller alternative to the company’s larger flagship phones. We may see other products launch on September 1st, but at least that’s the one the company is teasing heavily.

Rumors suggest that the Sony Xperia 5 IV is almost ready for launch, with its FCC certification in recent days. Reports say the phone will feature the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, a 6-inch OLED display and three 12MP cameras on the back. The changes so far seem minimal compared to the last-gen phone, with one highlight being the introduction of wireless charging. We’ll probably know a lot more about Sony’s next phone by the end of next week.
