Fantastic MagSafe smartphone car holders

I’m not sure about everyone, but I know that a strong smartphone car holder is on my list of in-car tech essentials. I’ve used dozens of car mounts, some good, some great, and the iOttie Velox lands in my fantastic category.

The iOttie Velox series includes the Dash & Windshield Wireless Charging Stand, In-Wall Magnetic Mount, Duo Wireless Charging Stand, Air Vent Wireless Charging Stand, and Magnetic Grille Mount ventilation. Most of our review will cover the wireless charging dashboard and windshield mount. iOttie also sent the Magnetic Flush Mount, which is the same thing, but without wireless charging. So consider that almost everything we say about the first applies to the second.

The iOttie Velox has the following features and specifications:

  • Fast wireless charging up to 7.5W
  • Strong magnetic hold
  • Streamlined and adjustable telescopic arm
  • Superior suction force
  • Durable aluminum housing with soft silicone face
  • USB-C charger included

What’s in the box

In the box
  • iOttie Velox Wireless Charging Dashboard and Windshield Mount
  • 12V power adapter
  • Dashboard
  • Manuals and Documentation

Most of these types of car mounts are designed in much the same way. The iOttie Velox has taken a typical design and given it a bit more panache with some curves and high quality materials. The front has the MagSafe mounting face with excellent rubber padding to protect your iPhone. There is a rotating ball joint to adjust the look left, right, up and down.

There is a telescopic arm which allows forward or backward adjustment. The swivel button moves the arm up and down and the lever adjusts the sticky suction cup. There is also a dashboard cushion that comes with a 3M sticky back, which is useful for dashboards that the suction cup does not stick to.

I read a negative review because the suction cup wouldn’t stick to their dashboard. This is very common for these types of mounts. That’s why the iOttie Velox comes with the dashboard pad; 3M backing provides better grip to some of the slick dashboards of some cars. However, I wish there was a way to make the sticky suction cup adhere better to smooth dashboards.

The 12V power adapter is a USB-C adapter. It would have been nice if iOttie had added a second USB-C port or even a USB-A port so you could charge a second device with it. This adapter takes your power outlet and powers the iOttie Velox wireless charging dashboard and windshield mount only.

Overall the design is excellent. It looks sleeker than most competing products and it’s very high quality. My two complaints aren’t that big, but it would have been nice to have a second USB port on the adapter. And it would be nice not to have to use the 3M dash pad.

We used the dashboard cushion for installation.

Installation is straightforward. For windshield use, release the lever, place the iOttie Velox, push the sticky suction cup onto the windshield and lock the lever in place. The lever is used to pull the center of the suction cup inward and push it outward. This gives you the suction needed to grip the windshield.

The process is the same for mounting the dashboard, except when using the dashboard pad. I used the dashboard cushion for my wife’s Ford Flex because the dashboard is very smooth and the suction cup wouldn’t stick. Find your spot, remove the 3M dash pad mount, push it into place and follow the same steps to mount the Velox to the pad.

A note that seems essential to me. The 3M adhesive back is strong and could damage your dashboard if not removed properly. You will therefore have to think about using it before you start. Removing it takes some warmth and patience, but it can be done.

Overall, installation was a breeze. Not much to worry about here.

The magnet holds the phone well and with a MagSafe compatible case as well.

The iOttie Velox Wireless Charging Dashboard and Windshield Mount is designed for iPhones that use MagSafe charging. We haven’t tested this with Android phones or iPhones without MagSafe. It could potentially work with other phones, so use it at your own risk.

The Velox Wireless Charging Dash and Windshield Mount charges at 7.5W, and it had no problem keeping our iPhone 13 Pro Max or iPhone 12 Pro Max charged for multiple trips. The Velox kept the iPhone charged even when using maps for navigation and streaming Apple Music through the phone.

There were also no signs of overheating or any weird abnormalities, or disconnections. Everything worked very well.

Overall, we had no performance issues. We wish we could load faster, but I think this is an Apple issue, not an iOttie issue.

A second USB port on the adapter would have been nice

Price value

The iOttie Velox is priced at $59.99, which is on par with other dash mounts. Well worth the asking price and offers a lot of value. The magnetic flush mount is priced at $29.95 and only lacks adjustment and charging. But it’s a great solution for those who use something like wired Apple Car Play and charge through a wired connection.

I highly recommend the iOttie Velox Wireless Charging Dashboard and Windshield Mount for anyone in need of MagSafe wireless charging. For those who just want a MagSafe magnetic mount, the Velox recessed magnetic mount is also highly recommended.

iOttie Velox review Techaeris-min

Nailed it

  • Slim design
  • The MagSafe function works well, make sure you have a MagSafe case if you use a case
  • Installation is a snap
  • Charges your iPhone quite well at 7.5W
  • The price is comparable to other brands

Work needed

  • Not iOttie’s fault, but it would be nice if someone could get the suction cup to stick to the dash. This way you don’t have to use the stronger 3M base plate.
  • The adapter could use a second USB port
