6 things to update to keep your smartphone safe

If you have a smartphone, chances are you use it every day to browse the web, make payments, watch videos, and do a lot of other things. Therefore, ensuring the security of your device is an important task.

While most smartphones and tablets are powered by Android or iOS, there is one common way to keep them secure: update software and apps.

But what exactly should you watch out for? Here are some things you need to keep up to date in order to protect your operating system.

1. Update your operating system

With any modern smartphone, you should expect at least two years of system updates.

If you don’t get any updates, you either switched to an older device, or the manufacturer didn’t provide an update.

Android phones generally provide three to four years of updates, with 1 to 2 major upgrades to the Android version and security updates for the remainder of the term.

And with iOS devices, you can comfortably expect four to five years of software updates for new versions of iOS.

While you get decent software support for each type of smartphone, you need to regularly update your mobile device to keep it safe. Even though this is a minor update, there may be several improvements under the hood to protect your smartphone.

Some prefer to install the updates later or skip them altogether, maybe because they don’t like the new software upgrade or don’t want to deal with annoying bugs and crashes. It’s a valid reason, but you risk your phone’s security the longer you wait.

You must therefore prioritize updating the operating system of your smartphone (or tablet) and apply it as quickly as possible.

2. Update the browser application

Whenever you open a link on a device, you are using the web browser installed on your phone.

If you are using a mobile web browser that is not secure, your browsing activities may be vulnerable to malicious attacks.

Even if you know what you are doing, not updating the browser application can help attackers exploit vulnerabilities known to find their way into your system.

It is therefore important to always install an update, if available, for your web browser.

3. Update the Banking and Payments application

You can have multiple wallet apps on your phone to make purchases, deposit funds, or withdraw them when needed.

Remember, you probably also have a banking app or budgeting app to manage your finances.

Many prefer to apply the updates available for these apps later, as they might disrupt your banking or payment experience.

While everything should work even if you don’t update them, it poses a serious security threat.

Updating them to the latest available version ensures that you are well protected.

4. Update the keyboard application

Many smartphone users ignore the role of a keyboard app in protecting privacy and security.

Since you enter every piece of information using this keyboard, it is important to choose a secure keyboard app. So updating it regularly should also be part of your routine.

If you’re using iOS, you might not find an update available for the Apple Keyboard by default. No security fixes are provided as part of system updates.

5. Update the Office suite applications

Documents are no longer limited to desktop computers. Many office suite applications are available for Android and iOS.

The documents you access may seem harmless, but they are one of the ways malware is spread. Additionally, when accessing sensitive documents, any privacy concerns with a document viewer application can be of concern.

So, to be on the safe side, always apply the latest updates for office apps installed on your device.

6. Update security applications

Security apps on smartphones aren’t exactly common, but they help fight various malicious attacks. In fact, you might be wondering if you need antivirus apps for Android and iOS anyway. You certainly do.

You can install one, but you also need to keep it up to date.

Updates to security and antivirus applications help detect the latest threats, so malware doesn’t go unnoticed on your smartphone.
